eBay Final Value Fees: Why Shipping Charged to the Buyer Still Costs You

Sep 22, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

eBay sellers still say 'they take about 13 percent' as if that sentence were a pricing model. Final value fee is a percentage of a base, and the base is often the item price plus the shipping you charged the buyer, plus tax in some cases, minus nothing you hoped would be excluded. Your own postage, the cost of the goods, and the payment processing that used to be a separate line are what turn a tidy percentage into a thin order. This calculator asks for sale price, shipping charged, your cost plus the shipping you pay, and the category FVF percent, because those four numbers are the order.

Category rates are not a single number. Most categories sit near a familiar headline rate, and some — watches, some business equipment, heavy industrial — do not. Promoted listings are a second percentage you opted into, and they apply when the attribution rules say they apply, which is not only when you feel the click was yours. If you run promotions, add that rate to the category rate in the percent field or run the calculator twice and keep the worse one as the planning case. The worse one is the one that should decide whether the listing exists.

Example. Item $48. Shipping charged to the buyer $9. If final value fee is 13.25 percent of 57, the fee is about $7.55, not 13.25 percent of 48. Your goods cost $18 and the label you bought was $8.10. Contribution before promoted listings is 48 plus 9, minus 7.55, minus 18, minus 8.10, which is $23.35. That is fine. Now charge 'free shipping' and raise the item to $57 so the buyer sees the same total. The fee base may be similar, but you have hidden the shipping inside a price shoppers compare to a $48 competitor. Sometimes free shipping wins the click and loses the comparison. Run both versions. Do not pick the one that feels more professional. Pick the one that clears your margin after the fee.

International sales add a second mistake: using a domestic label cost for an order that will ship overseas, or ignoring that a global shipping program fee is not your postage. If you do not know the label, buy one test label before you price the listing. Currency conversion, if your payout lands in another currency through Payoneer or Wise, is another haircut. A 1.5 percent FX spread on a year of eBay sales is not a rounding error. Run the payout through the Payoneer and Wise calculator after this one, not instead of it.

Returns on eBay are a policy you chose and a cost you still have to model. A 5 percent return rate on a $48 item, with you paying return postage once in a while, belongs in 'your cost' as an expected value even though it is not on the supplier invoice. Sellers who leave it at zero are not optimistic. They are unaudited. Also watch insertion and listing upgrades. They are small per item and real across a messy store. Once a quarter, end the listings that have not sold and are not strategic. A fee you stop paying does not have to be earned back with promoted listings.

Use the tool with the rate from your seller invoice, not from memory. Change shipping charged and shipping paid independently. They are not the same number, and treating them as one field is how people conclude eBay 'takes half.' eBay did not take half. You charged $9, paid $14, and called the difference a fee. The calculator will not correct a story you refuse to split into lines. It will show the lines if you type them.

None of this is eBay's official schedule. Managed payments, category tables and promotion attribution change. If your invoice and this page disagree, the invoice wins and your input was stale. Update it. Then decide whether the SKU still deserves a slot. A store can be busy, well photographed and unprofitable. The final value fee is not the villain in that story unless you priced as if it were optional. It is not optional. It is the toll on the road you chose, and the toll is printed. Read it before the next sourcing trip, not after the payout looks thin.

If you offer free shipping, the postage still belongs in product cost, and the shipping amount you did not charge the buyer should not be typed as if it reduced the fee base. Sellers mix those two ideas and then cannot explain a thin payout. Write postage in one column and the fee base in another. The calculator is patient. Your sourcing budget is not. Check both columns on the next listing before you renew it.
