Walmart Marketplace Fees: Referral, WFS and the Payout You Actually Get

Sep 22, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

Walmart Marketplace looks like a retail relationship: you send goods, they show them next to store brands, a customer checks out, money arrives. The payout email is the only honest page in that story, and it arrives after referral, fulfillment and the cost you already spent. Sellers who price from a competitor's shelf tag, then subtract a round 15 percent, are often surprised that WFS (Walmart Fulfillment Services) took another several dollars per unit and that a return wiped the week. The calculator on this page is a rehearsal of that email before you ship a pallet.

Referral on Walmart is category-specific. Apparel is not the same rate as electronics, and a promotional or reduced-referral window is not the rate you will pay in month six. Type the percentage from your own fee schedule, not from a 2024 screenshot in a Facebook group. Fulfillment is a dollar amount, not a vibe. WFS charges depend on size and weight. If you fulfill yourself, put your real pick-pack-and-label cost in that field anyway — your time and the box are not free just because Walmart did not invoice them. Product cost means landed cost: unit, inbound freight, packaging, and any prep the warehouse billed you.

Work a $39 item. Referral at 15 percent is $5.85. Product plus inbound is $14. WFS is $6.40. Profit before returns and ads is 39 minus 5.85 minus 14 minus 6.40, which is $12.75, about 33 percent of the sale price. That is a workable SKU until returns. If 6 percent of units come back and you recover half the product, load about $0.40 to $0.70 of expected loss into every sale. A sponsored-search campaign at 8 percent of sales is another $3.12. The comfortable $12.75 is now closer to $9. The listing can still be worth it. It is no longer the listing you described to your partner.

Three mistakes show up on almost every first Walmart catalog. First, using the retail price as if referral applied only to the item and not checking whether shipping you charged is inside the fee base. Second, comparing a Walmart payout to an Amazon FBA payout without using the same landed cost. A product can win on one and donate on the other. Third, scaling a SKU because the buy box looks busy. Busy is not margin. Run the same numbers on our eBay final value fee calculator and the Temu seller calculator before you decide this channel is the one that deserves the inventory.

When you use the tool, fill sale price, the referral percent you were actually charged last month, product plus shipping cost, and the WFS or self-fulfillment dollar amount. Then change one input at a time. Raise referral to the top of your category range. Add a dollar to fulfillment, because dimensional weight surprises people. Drop the price by the coupon you are considering. If any of those versions goes thin, do not list the coupon and do not send a second carton. Update the inputs when your settlement disagrees with the calculator. Trust the settlement. The tool is there so the disagreement is obvious in a minute.

This is planning math, not Walmart's contract and not tax advice. Programs, referral tables and WFS rate cards change. A reduced-referral promotion can end. A size-tier reclassification can move a product from a cheap fulfillment bucket to an expensive one after you have already printed labels. Keep the rate card PDF next to the calculator result. If you cannot point at the line that matches the percentage you typed, you are guessing, and guessing is how a marketplace catalog fills with products that look strategic and pay like a hobby.

A useful monthly habit: take one real order, not a hypothetical, and type the settlement line by line. If payout and your sheet differ by more than a timing lag, you have a fee you are not modeling — a return processing charge, a prep fee, an advertising invoice that landed in a different report. Find it before the reorder. Scaling a misunderstanding is more expensive than the five minutes the calculator takes. Pair this page with the Shein and Mercado Libre calculators if you sell the same SKU in more than one country. The winner is the channel where contribution margin survives the fee stack, not the channel with the most impressive logo.

Once a quarter, export a month of settlements and average the fee percent you actually paid, not the percent in the rate card you typed in September. Promotions, returns and a size-tier change will move that average. If the average is worse than the field on this page, update the field before the next purchase order. A catalog priced on last quarter's promotion is a catalog priced on a discount that already ended.
