Remote Salary: The Offer, the Cost of Living, and the Tax You Still Owe Somewhere

Aug 31, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

A remote offer is a number plus a city you will actually live in, plus a tax system that may not be the company's. Comparing two salaries without the rent is how people move for a raise and feel poorer. This page takes salary figures and a simple cost factor so you can see purchasing power before you celebrate. It does not file your taxes. It does not know if your new country will tax the salary, if your old country still will, or if a state you left still considers you a resident. Those questions can dwarf the cost-of-living gap. The page handles the gap you can see. A qualified person handles the residency question before you book the flight.

The inputs are the job, not a formality. This page takes one salary, a current-city cost index, a target-city index, and a remote-adjustment percent. San Francisco is the example 100 on the label, not a law. The adjusted figure is salary times target divided by current, then haircut by the adjustment percent. It also shows the salary you would need in the target city to match today's purchasing power. It does not compare two different offers side by side. Run it twice if you have two offers. Indexes are averages. If you do not drive, a city index that punishes car insurance is lying about you. Nudge the index with a real rent listing, not with a national vibe.

A 90,000 salary with current index 100 and target index 140 becomes 126,000 before any remote haircut, which is the raise you would need just to stand still. The page's 'needed in target' line is the number to put next to the offer, not the headline they emailed. A 10 percent remote adjustment then cuts the adjusted figure. Tax is not a field here. Haircut both sides yourself, using a percentage from a prior year or from a tax authority's estimator, not from a forum. If one offer is a contract rate, run the freelance net page first. A contract that is 20 percent higher and has no health insurance is a different product.

The miss is comparing gross salaries across currencies at a flattering rate. Use the rate your payout provider actually delivered, from the fee page's method. The second miss is ignoring housing. An index that says 120 can hide a rent that is double because you refuse roommates and the index assumed them. Get a real listing. The third miss is a tax residency surprise. Living 'temporarily' in a place can still create a filing duty. The calculator will not save you from that. A conversation with a tax professional who knows both countries might. Budget for that conversation if the move is international. It is cheaper than a wrong move.

Convert the salary at a real payout rate before you type it. Type one salary and two indexes you can explain. Replace the housing part of the index with a listing if you can. Subtract a tax percent you did not invent this morning. Then compare the leftovers, and only then consider the career value of the role. A slightly poorer year in a role that changes your trajectory can be rational. It should be chosen as that, not discovered as a rent shock in month two. Write the leftover number in the offer email's margin. Accept or decline the margin, not the headline.

This is not tax, immigration, or employment advice. Cost-of-living indexes are estimates and go stale. Tax residency, double-tax treaties, state residency, and visa rules are specific to your facts and can change. Nothing here tells you whether you may work from a country, whether a visa allows employment, or what you will owe. If the move crosses a border, talk to a qualified tax adviser and, if relevant, an immigration lawyer before you rely on a salary comparison. A calculator that ignores a filing duty is not conservative. It is incomplete. Treat it as incomplete.

Save the listings, the FX screenshot, and the tax percent source next to the comparison. When someone asks how you picked, you can show the leftover rather than the headline. At month six, compare actual rent and actual tax to the sketch. The error is useful for the next offer. Remote work makes these offers more frequent, not easier. A personal error log is the only index that knows your life. The public index knows a basket of goods. You are not a basket. You are a lease and a filing status. Start from those.

Read the result back before you act. Say the leftover after cost and a tax guess, not the gross. If the leftovers are close, stop optimizing and choose the work you want. Close leftovers are not a puzzle. They are permission to consider the rest of your life.

Benefits, equipment, and coworking are salary. A job that pays 5,000 more and expects you to fund a home office, a faster uplink, and your own health coverage may pay less. List those as annual numbers and subtract them before you feel grateful. Gratitude is not a line item. The uplink is. So is the day you will spend on a visa renewal. Price the day. Then decide.
