Tile Calculator with Waste

How to use

  1. Fill the fields with numbers you measured or were quoted.
  2. Click Calculate.
  3. Change one input and run it again. The interesting answer is the difference.
  4. If a handbook or a product label disagrees, believe that, not this page.

Waste is the cuts at the walls, a broken tile, and a pattern that does not start on a grout line. Ten percent is a straight lay on a simple room. A diagonal lay wants more. Type 15 if the room has a lot of corners.

Worked example. 10 by 8 feet is 80 sq ft. At 10% waste that is 88 sq ft. Twelve-inch tiles cover 1 sq ft each, so you need 88 tiles. If the box holds 10, buy 9 boxes, not 8.8.

Grout and thinset are separate. This count will not tell you how many bags. Read the bag for coverage at your trowel size.
