Fish Tank Volume and Stocking: Gallons First, Then the Inch Rule's Limits

Sep 8, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

An aquarium is a volume of water with a filter pretending to be a river. The volume decides the dose of conditioner, the heater size, and whether the stocking you want is a kindness or a crowd. This page multiplies length, width and height in inches and divides by 231 to get US gallons, then applies a rough one-inch-of-fish-per-gallon sketch using the average fish size you type. That sketch is a ceiling people already abuse. It is not a blessing to fill the tank on day one. A new tank has no biological filter yet. The math can be right and the fish can still die if you skip the cycle.

The inputs are the job, not a formality. Measure the water volume you will actually fill, not the glass to the brim if you stop an inch short, and not the stand. Internal dimensions, in inches. Average fish size is a blunt instrument. A 2 inch tetra and a 2 inch goldfish are not the same bioload, and a fish that will grow to 8 inches should be counted as the adult, not as the juvenile in the bag. The page will cheerfully divide gallons by the size you type. If you type the baby size, you have asked for permission you should not use. Type the adult. Then buy fewer than the number, not more.

A 36 by 18 by 16 inch tank is 36 times 18 times 16 divided by 231, about 45 gallons if you fill it, less if you do not. At a strict inch-per-gallon and 2 inch fish, the sketch says a couple dozen fish. That is already a lot of animals in a box, and schooling fish need a group, while territorial fish need space the inch rule does not understand. A 45 gallon tank is a good home for a modest community if the filter is real and the water is cycled. It is a bad home for 'as many as the calculator said' on the day you set it up. Compute the gallons. Use them for water changes: a 25 percent change is a quarter of that number, in a bucket you have marked. The bucket is the tool you will use every week. The stocking number is the number you should undercut.

The miss is using the inch rule as a target instead of a warning. The second miss is forgetting gravel, decor and a waterline displace volume, so the fill is less than the glass math. The third miss is adding fish before the cycle. Ammonia does not care about your gallon count. Also, goldfish, cichlids, and common plecos are famous for being sold as small and dying as large. If the shop's label says 'grows to,' believe the second number. The calculator will not override a species. You have to refuse the bag.

Measure inside the glass. Type the inches. Read gallons and liters. Mark a bucket. Then look up the species you want and their adult size and temperament, in a source that is not the sticker on the tank. Subtract fish until the list feels sparse. Sparse is how beginners end up with a living tank. Full is how they end up with a water change they cannot keep up with. If you are treating the water, dose to the gallons you calculated, not to the tank's advertised size. Advertised size is a marketing dimension. Your tape is the tank.

This is not veterinary advice and not a complete stocking plan. The inch-per-gallon idea is a rough hobby rule with many exceptions, and it ignores filtration, planting, temperature and species. Fish can suffer in a tank that 'has room on paper.' If an animal is sick, gasping, or you are unsure about a medication dose, talk to a knowledgeable aquarist or a vet. Medication dosed to the wrong gallons is how people harm the fish they were trying to help. Nothing here replaces a species profile. A number of fish is not a community.

Write the gallons on the hood with a marker. Every water change and every dose for the life of the tank starts there. When you want another fish, look at the adult size and the current list before you look at the calculator. The calculator already gave you the ceiling. Your job is to stay under it, with animals that can live together, in water you have actually cycled. A smaller stocking in a known volume beats a precise overcrowding. The fish will not thank you. They will simply still be there in six months, which is the result.

Read the result back before you act. Say the gallons, then say the adult size of the fish you want. If the second sentence is 'it stays small,' check again. The shop has incentives. The tank does not.

Filter flow and heater watts are the next two purchases, and both are sized to gallons. A filter rated for a smaller tank is a decoration. A heater that is marginal will run constantly and fail on the night you are away. Use the gallon number twice more before you buy livestock. Livestock is the reward for having done the volume, the cycle, and the equipment. It is not the first step, no matter what the empty tank looks like in the living room.
