Etsy Fees in 2026: Why 6.5% Is Never the Whole Number
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
Sellers describe Etsy fees as "about six and a half percent" and then wonder why the deposit is smaller than the maths. Etsy does not take one fee. It takes a stack: a listing fee to publish, a transaction fee on the order total, a payment processing fee on the same total, a small regulatory operating fee that varies by country, and — if you opted into offsite ads — a second percentage on any sale Etsy decides it influenced. Add the onsite ad budget you chose to spend, and the "six and a half percent" story is gone.
This calculator takes the whole stack apart so you can see each line. Enter the item price, the shipping you charge the buyer, any gift wrap charge, and the quantity. Then set the rates you actually pay: transaction fee, listing fee, payment processing percentage and fixed amount, regulatory operating fee, offsite ads tier, and your onsite ad spend. Everything is computed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.
Worked example. A $24.99 candle, $4.95 shipping, no gift wrap, quantity one. Transaction fee at 6.5% of $29.94 is $1.95. Listing fee $0.20. Payment processing 3% of $29.94 plus $0.25 is $1.15. Regulatory operating fee at 0.5% is $0.15. No offsite ad on this order. Onsite ads averaged $0.40 per order. Total fees: $3.85 — that is 12.9% of the order value, not 6.5%. Net before your costs: $26.09.
Now change one number. Enrol in offsite ads at the 15% tier (sellers under $10,000 a year) and this same order attracts an extra $4.49, taking total fees to $8.34 and the effective rate to 27.9%. That is the number most sellers never see, because offsite ads are charged on a different schedule and are easy to miss in the monthly statement. Run every product through this calculator with the offsite rate switched on. If a product cannot survive its own offsite ad rate, it cannot survive as a business.
Shipping is the trap. The transaction fee applies to item price plus the shipping you charged, not to the item price alone. If you offer free shipping and fold $5 into the price, the fee base rises and you pay transaction fee on the postage you never received. If you charge shipping separately, the buyer compares your item price to a competitor who folded it in, and the fee base is smaller. Neither is universally right. The calculator lets you test both by changing one field and watching the net payout move.
Listing fees compound quietly. $0.20 sounds like nothing until you carry 500 listings on automatic renewal at four months each. That is $3,000 of listing fees a year for inventory that mostly does not sell. The calculator multiplies the listing fee by quantity so you can see what a catalogue costs before you scale it. A lean catalogue of 80 listings that turn over beats a fat one that renews into the void.
Regulatory operating fee is small and non-negotiable. It exists because regulators require marketplaces to report seller data. It is capped per order and it changes by country. If you sell into several regions, set the rate conservatively — overestimating a fee that costs you $0.15 is free insurance; underestimating it is a slow leak across thousands of orders.
Use it as a pricing instrument, not a receipt. Before you list, decide the margin you need, then work backwards with the Etsy Pricing Calculator. If the price that clears your margin is above what the market pays, the product is wrong, not the fee. Fees are a fact; pricing is a decision. Most sellers spend their energy on the fact and none on the decision.
Run this calculator once a quarter. Etsy changes rates, adds regulatory fees, and adjusts offsite tiers. The sellers who re-check quarterly reprice on time; the sellers who check never discover the change in a monthly deposit they no longer understand.
Frequently asked questions
What are Etsy fees in 2026?
The core stack is a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total (item plus shipping plus gift wrap), payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 in the US, and a small regulatory operating fee. Offsite ads add 12% or 15% on attributed sales only. Onsite Etsy Ads spend is separate.
Does Etsy take a fee on shipping?
Yes. The transaction fee is calculated on the item price plus the shipping charged to the buyer plus gift wrap. Free shipping does not avoid it — you simply move the postage into the item price and pay the fee on that instead.
How much does Etsy take offsite ads?
Sellers who made under $10,000 in the previous 12 months pay 15% on an offsite-attributed sale. Sellers above $10,000 pay 12%. You can opt out, but opting out reduces your visibility in Etsy's offsite placements.
Is the Etsy fee calculator accurate?
It applies the published rate structure to the numbers you enter, in your browser, with no rounding tricks. Exact regulatory fees vary slightly by country and change over time, so treat the regulatory line as an estimate and the rest as precise.
