How to Price an Etsy Product So the Margin Actually Survives
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
Most sellers price by guessing, then by copying the cheapest competitor, then by panic. Pricing by margin is the opposite process: decide what you need to earn, then compute the only price that delivers it. If the market will not pay that price, you have learned something important before you built inventory, not after.
This calculator solves the pricing equation backwards. Enter the margin you want as a percentage of order value, your material cost per unit, the labour hours and the hourly rate you believe your time is worth, packaging, the postage you pay, and the shipping you charge the buyer. Add your offsite ads tier and average onsite ad spend. The output is the item price that hits your target margin exactly, along with the fee stack, the profit in dollars, and the effective hourly wage.
The formula, in plain words. An Etsy order is worth the item price plus shipping charged. Etsy removes a percentage of that total (transaction, payment processing, regulatory and offsite ads all scale with it), plus two fixed charges (listing fee and payment fixed fee), plus your ad spend. What remains must cover your variable costs and leave your target margin. Because the percentage applies to the total, the price sits in both sides of the equation — which is why guessing fails and algebra works.
Worked example. Target margin 45%. Materials $7.50, labour 1.5 hours at $18 is $27, packaging $1.20, postage $5.40. Shipping charged $4.95, offsite 0%, onsite ads $0.35. Variable costs: $41.10. The calculator returns an item price of about $65 and an order value of about $70. Etsy fees about $5.40, profit about $23.90, effective wage about $15.90 an hour. If comparable mugs sell for $32, the product is wrong — not the margin target.
Margin target depends on the product. Digital downloads can carry 80-90% because there is no material and no postage. Handmade ceramics live at 45-60% because labour dominates. Resale and print-on-demand sit at 20-35% because you compete on price with no craft story. Set the target for your category, not for your hopes.
Labour is the number sellers lie about. Set your hourly rate at zero and the calculator will happily return a low, comfortable, wrong price. Set it at what you could earn in a shop down the road and the price jumps. That jump is the truth. A product that only works when your time is free is not a business; it is a donation with a brand name.
Shipping strategy changes the answer. Charge shipping separately and the transaction fee applies to a smaller base, but buyers see a higher item price than competitors who folded it in. Offer free shipping and the fee base grows, but your item price looks competitive. Run the calculator both ways by changing the shipping charged field. Usually the right answer is to charge close to your real postage — it keeps the fee base honest and stops you subsidising distant buyers.
Re-run when rates change. Etsy adjusts fees, adds regulatory charges, and moves offsite tiers. A price set eighteen months ago at a 45% margin may now deliver 30%. Revisit every listing quarterly, and use the Etsy Profit Calculator to check what your current prices actually deliver.
Frequently asked questions
How do I price my Etsy products?
Decide a target margin for your category, add up material, labour at a real hourly rate, packaging and postage, then solve backwards. This calculator does the algebra: it returns the item price that delivers your target margin after every Etsy fee.
What margin should handmade sellers target?
45-60% for handmade goods where labour dominates, 20-35% for print-on-demand and resale, and 80%+ for digital downloads. Below 12% a product cannot survive one offsite ad sale or one damaged parcel.
Should I include free shipping in my price?
Test both. Free shipping raises the fee base because Etsy charges transaction fee on the total, but it makes your item price look competitive. The calculator lets you change the shipping charged field and see the effect on the required price.
Why is the recommended price higher than competitors?
Because your costs are higher or your margin target is. Do not match the cheapest listing — solve the problem instead: smaller size, cheaper material, faster process, or a different product entirely.
