Etsy Break-Even: How Many Sales Before You Earn Anything

Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

Break-even answers the question every shop owner asks at 2am: how many of these do I actually need to sell? It is the point where the money coming in exactly covers the money going out — no profit, no loss, no illusions. Below it you are paying to work. Above it you are being paid to work.

Enter your monthly fixed costs: Etsy Plus if you subscribe, listing software, a share of your studio rent, equipment depreciation, anything that exists whether you sell one item or a hundred. Then the item price, shipping charged, your variable cost per unit (material plus labour plus packaging plus postage), your offsite ads tier, and your average onsite ad spend. The calculator returns contribution per unit, units to break even, and revenue to break even.

Contribution per unit is the engine. It is what one sale leaves after Etsy fees and your variable costs. Everything above it pays fixed costs. If contribution is negative, the shop cannot break even at any volume — selling more simply loses money faster. The calculator says so plainly rather than returning a comforting number.

Worked example. Fixed costs $95 a month. Item $32, shipping $4.95, order value $36.95. Etsy fees at 6.5% transaction, 3% payment, 0.5% regulatory, $0.20 listing, $0.25 fixed and $0.35 ads: about $3.30. Variable cost $41.10. Contribution: $36.95 minus $3.30 minus $41.10, which is minus $7.45. Break-even: never. This is the mug from the profit example, and no amount of marketing rescues it.

Change the labour assumption and the picture flips. If the mug takes 45 minutes at $18 an hour instead of 90, variable cost falls to $27.60 and contribution rises to $6.05. Break-even becomes 16 units and $591 of monthly revenue. That is achievable. The difference between an impossible shop and a working one was a process change, not a marketing budget.

Fixed costs are where shops quietly bleed. Subscriptions stack up: a keyword tool, a listing tool, a mockup tool, Etsy Plus. Twenty dollars here and fifteen there is $95 a month, which at a $6 contribution is 16 sales you must make before you earn a cent. Audit the list. Cancel anything you have not opened this month.

Volume is not the only lever. Raising contribution by $2 halves the units needed in a high-contribution shop. That can come from a $3 price rise, a cheaper material, a smaller size, or a faster process. Compare the effort: a price rise takes five minutes; doubling sales takes months.

Run this calculator once a month with your real fixed costs. It converts the vague worry of "am I making money" into a specific target: this many units, at this price, with this contribution. Shops with a number grow; shops with a feeling stall.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate break-even for my Etsy shop?
Add your monthly fixed costs, work out contribution per unit (order value minus Etsy fees minus variable costs), then divide fixed costs by contribution. The result is units per month; multiply by order value for revenue.

What if my contribution per unit is negative?
You cannot break even at any volume — each sale increases the loss. Fix it by raising price, cutting material or labour cost, or dropping the product. The calculator flags this explicitly.

What counts as a fixed cost for an Etsy shop?
Etsy Plus, listing and keyword tools, mockup software, a share of studio rent, equipment, and any subscription that exists regardless of sales. Listing fees are variable, not fixed, because they scale with listings.

How many sales do most Etsy shops need to break even?
It depends entirely on contribution per unit. A shop with $95 fixed costs and $6 contribution needs 16 sales a month. The same shop with a $2 contribution needs 48. Improve contribution before chasing traffic.
