Etsy Ads: ROAS, ACoS and the Break-Even Nobody Quotes

Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

Etsy Ads sells clicks, not orders, and sellers measure the wrong one. A campaign with a beautiful click-through rate and a dreadful conversion rate is an expense. A campaign with a mediocre CTR and a strong conversion rate is an investment. The only number that separates them is profit after fees, which is what this calculator returns.

Enter your total ad spend for the period, the revenue Etsy attributes to those ads, the number of orders, your average order value including shipping, your profit margin, and your offsite ads tier. The calculator returns ROAS (revenue divided by spend), ACoS (spend divided by revenue), your break-even ROAS, gross profit from ad orders, and the net profit after the ad spend. It also gives cost per order so you can compare against your margin per order directly.

Break-even ROAS is the number nobody quotes. If your margin is 40% and Etsy takes roughly 10% in transaction, payment and regulatory fees, your break-even ROAS is about 3.3x. That means every dollar of ad spend must generate at least $3.30 of attributed revenue just to stand still. Sellers celebrate a "3x ROAS" without realising it is a loss. The calculator computes your exact break-even from your own inputs, including your offsite ads tier.

Worked example. Spend $120, attributed revenue $540, 18 orders, average order value $30, margin 40%, offsite 0%. ROAS is 4.5x. ACoS is 22.2%. Profit per order is $30 × 0.40 minus $30 × 0.10, which is $9.00. Gross profit from ad orders: $162. Net after ads: $42. Break-even ROAS: 3.3x. Verdict: profitable, but only by $42 — which is one and a half hours of your time, not a growth engine.

Attribution is generous and you should discount it. Etsy attributes a sale to an ad if the shopper clicked within a window that is longer than most people's memory. If you pause ads and revenue barely moves, the attribution was doing the selling, not the ad. The honest test is to compare profit per order with ads on versus ads off across comparable weeks, not to read the dashboard.

Scale by 20%, not by hope. When a campaign is profitable, the instinct is to triple the budget. Etsy's auction then bids for a wider, less relevant audience and the cost per order climbs until you are back at break-even. Raise budget by 20% at a time, watch cost per order for a week, and stop when it crosses your margin.

Fix conversion before you add budget. If cost per order is above your profit per order, the cheapest fix is almost never more spend. It is a better main photo, a title that leads with the search phrase, a price that clears your margin, or a listing that answers the three questions buyers ask. Every point of conversion improvement reduces the ROAS you need to break even.

Re-run this calculator monthly with the real numbers from your Etsy payment account, not from the ads dashboard alone. The dashboard measures clicks; your bank account measures whether the clicks were worth having.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROAS for Etsy Ads?
Anything above your break-even ROAS. With a 40% margin and typical Etsy fees, break-even is around 3.3x, so a genuinely good ROAS is 4x or higher. A "3x ROAS" that sellers celebrate is usually a small loss.

What is ACoS and what should it be?
ACoS is ad spend divided by ad revenue. If your profit margin is 40% and fees take 10%, your break-even ACoS is about 30%. Below that you make money on ads; above it you are subsidising Etsy.

Are Etsy Ads worth it for small shops?
Only when profit per order exceeds cost per order. For many small shops the honest answer is no — the same money spent on photography, packaging and listing SEO produces more durable returns. Use the calculator to decide with numbers.

How do I calculate Etsy Ads profit?
Take your average order value, multiply by your margin, subtract the Etsy fee percentage, and that is profit per order. Multiply by ad orders, then subtract your ad spend. The calculator does all of it and shows the break-even line.
