Etsy Keyword Research: Long-Tail Phrases Beat Head Terms
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
Etsy search is a phrase market. Shoppers do not type one word; they type a small sentence fragment describing what they want to buy and who it is for. A shop that competes for "mug" is competing with millions of listings and converting almost nobody. A shop that competes for "personalised ceramic mug gift for mom" is competing with a few thousand and converting a meaningful share of them.
This planner builds a long-tail keyword bank from one seed phrase. Enter your seed and optionally your niche, and it combines the seed with six intent families: gift intent (gift for her, present, birthday gift), craft intent (handmade, personalised, made to order), buyer intent (best, unique, set of), attribute intent (minimalist, rustic, large, white), recipient intent (for mom, for teacher, for wife) and seasonal intent (Christmas, Mother's Day, Black Friday). Each keyword is tagged with its intent family and an estimated difficulty based on phrase length.
Worked example. Seed "ceramic mug", niche "handmade pottery". The planner returns entries such as ceramic mug gift for her (gift intent, low difficulty), handmade ceramic mug (craft intent, medium), personalised ceramic mug for mom (recipient intent, low), minimalist ceramic mug white (attribute intent, low), christmas ceramic mug gift (seasonal intent, low) and the bare ceramic mug (head term, high difficulty). The order matters: the planner deliberately puts the low-difficulty phrases first because that is where a new shop can actually win.
Difficulty is estimated from length, and length is a good proxy. Four or more words almost always means low competition, because fewer sellers have built a listing around that exact phrase. Three words is medium. One or two words is the head term, dominated by established shops with thousands of sales. This is not a precise metric — real search volume and competition need a paid tool — but it points you in the right direction for free.
Gift and recipient intent convert best. A shopper searching "gift for teacher" is buying for someone else, often with a deadline, and is less price-sensitive than someone browsing "mug". If your product can plausibly be a gift, make sure at least four of your thirteen tags carry gift or recipient intent. That is the single highest-return change most Etsy sellers can make.
Seasonal keywords need lead time. Etsy shoppers search "Christmas gift" from early October. A listing created in late November misses the entire window. Note the seasonal keywords from your bank, build the listings six to eight weeks before the holiday, and let them accumulate reviews before the peak. Use the Etsy Seasonal Selling Calendar for the exact dates.
Turn the bank into tags. Copy the keyword list, pick the thirteen phrases that best describe your product and are under twenty characters, and run them through the Etsy Tag Generator to format them. Then paste the finished listing into the Etsy Listing SEO Checker to confirm nothing is truncated or duplicated.
Frequently asked questions
How do I do keyword research for Etsy for free?
Start with one seed phrase, expand it into long-tail combinations using gift, recipient, attribute and seasonal modifiers, then prioritise phrases of four or more words. This planner does the expansion and ranks the results by estimated difficulty.
What are long-tail keywords on Etsy?
Phrases of three or more words that describe a specific product for a specific buyer — "personalised ceramic mug gift for mom". They have lower search volume but far higher conversion and much lower competition than head terms.
How many keywords should I target per listing?
One primary phrase in the title, and up to twelve supporting phrases across your thirteen tags. Trying to target twenty phrases on one listing dilutes all of them.
When should I list seasonal products on Etsy?
Six to eight weeks before the holiday. Christmas and Mother's Day are the two biggest Etsy shopping seasons and both are searched from early October. The Seasonal Selling Calendar lists the dates.
