Etsy Alt Text: The Field Almost Every Seller Leaves Empty

Etsy gives every listing ten image slots, and each slot has its own alt text field of 250 characters. Most sellers leave them empty. That is a missed opportunity for accessibility, a missed opportunity for image search, and — because alt text is indexed — a missed opportunity to rank for phrases your title could not hold.
This generator composes alt text from the parts of your product. Enter the product, its colour or finish, its material, a key detail such as personalisation or size, the use or recipient, and your shop name. It assembles them into a natural, descriptive sentence and checks the result against Etsy's 250-character limit, trimming cleanly if you have overfilled it.

Describe the photo, not the product. Alt text exists to tell someone who cannot see the image what the image shows. If photo three is a close-up of the handle, its alt text should mention the handle. If photo seven shows the mug on a desk next to a notebook, say so. Ten identical alt texts on ten images is worse than ten empty ones — it tells Etsy your images are all the same.
Front-load the important words. Screen readers and search crawlers both weight the beginning. Lead with the colour and material, then the product, then the detail. "Matte white stoneware ceramic coffee mug" is stronger than "A lovely mug in white made of stoneware that is perfect for coffee".
Do not keyword-stuff. Alt text is read aloud to blind shoppers. A string of comma-separated keywords is unusable for them and reads as spam to Etsy. One natural sentence that happens to contain three or four real phrases beats twenty keywords every time. The generator writes sentences, not lists, for exactly this reason.
Use the remaining space for a phrase your title lacks. If your title says "Personalised Ceramic Mug" and your tags cover gift intent, put the colour and material in the alt text: "matte white stoneware" is a phrase your title is not competing for. Ten images with distinct alt text give you ten more chances to match a long-tail search.
