Etsy Limits: Why 140 and 20 Characters Are Hard Walls
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
Etsy truncates, and it truncates silently. A title longer than 140 characters is cut. A tag longer than twenty characters is cut. Alt text longer than 250 characters is cut. In every case the listing still saves successfully, which is why sellers discover the problem weeks later when a phrase they were counting on never appears in search.
This counter shows every limit live. Type into the title field and watch the count climb with a colour-coded bar: green while you have room, amber above ninety percent, red once you are over. The same applies to each of the five tag fields and the alt text field. The summary bar tells you how many fields are over limit, how many characters you have used in total, and how many of the seven fields you have filled.
Why the amber zone matters. A title at 138 characters is legal but wasteful — the extra words sit past the point where mobile search displays anything, and they dilute the phrase strength of what comes before. The sweet spot for a title is 60 to 110 characters: long enough to hold a primary phrase, secondary keywords and attributes, short enough that nothing important is cut.
Tags are where truncation hurts most. Twenty characters is short. "Personalised ceramic mug" is exactly twenty-three and will be cut to "personalised cerami" — a phrase nobody searches. The counter makes that visible immediately. If a tag is over, shorten it by dropping the weakest word, not by abbreviating: "custom ceramic mug" works, "personal ceramic mug" works, "pers ceramic mug" does not.
Alt text is the field sellers skip. Etsy allows 250 characters per image and uses them for accessibility and for image search. A specific, descriptive alt text — "White stoneware ceramic mug with a personalised name, handmade by ClayAndCo" — helps shoppers using screen readers and gives Etsy one more place to find your product. Keyword-stuffed alt text does the opposite.
Count before you paste. Sellers frequently write a title in a document, paste it into Etsy, and lose the last two keywords without noticing. Paste it here first. The counter is also useful for checking titles you have copied from a competitor — if theirs is over 140, they are losing those characters and you do not need to match them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Etsy title character limit?
140 characters. Roughly the first 40-60 characters appear in mobile search results, so put your primary keyword at the start and aim for 60-110 characters overall.
What is the Etsy tag character limit?
20 characters per tag, with 13 tags available. Anything over 20 is truncated silently — the tag still saves but competes for a phrase that does not exist.
What is the Etsy alt text limit?
250 characters per image. Use them: alt text supports accessibility and gives Etsy an additional signal for image search.
Does Etsy warn me when I go over the limit?
It stops you typing in some fields, but pasted text is often truncated without a clear warning. Always check with a counter before you publish.
