Etsy Tags: Thirteen Slots, Twenty Characters, No Room for Waste
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
Etsy gives every listing thirteen tag slots, twenty characters each, and most sellers fill them with the same three words in different orders. Tags are not a description field — they are the phrases Etsy matches against search. A tag nobody types is a wasted slot, and a tag over twenty characters is silently truncated.
This generator builds a full thirteen-tag set from one seed keyword. Enter your main phrase, choose a product type, and optionally add an occasion or recipient and a style or material. It combines your seed with the modifiers Etsy shoppers actually search — gift, personalised, custom, minimalist, for her, 2026, and so on — then filters every candidate to twenty characters and removes duplicates. The result is thirteen slots, each with a live character count, and a copy button.
Worked example. Seed "ceramic mug", product type handmade, occasion "gift for her", style "minimalist". The generator returns tags such as ceramic mug, mug ceramic, ceramic mug gift, gift for her, minimalist ceramic, ceramic mug set, handmade ceramic, personalised mug, custom ceramic mug, mug gift idea, ceramic mug 2026, cute ceramic mug, ceramic mug uk. Every one is under twenty characters and each targets a different search intent.
Why word order matters. Etsy matches phrases more strongly than it matches scattered words, and shoppers type in a natural order. "Ceramic mug" and "mug ceramic" are different searches to a human and to the algorithm. Reversing the seed costs you one slot and doubles your phrase coverage — the generator does it automatically.
Long-tail beats broad. A tag like "mug" competes with millions of listings and converts badly. "Personalised ceramic mug" competes with thousands and converts well. The generator deliberately builds longer phrases first and only uses the bare seed once. Use your thirteenth slot for the broadest term if you have one left, not your first.
Do not repeat a word across all thirteen tags. Etsy reads your tag set as a whole. Thirteen variations of the same word signal a thin listing; thirteen distinct phrases signal a well-described one. If more than half your tags share the same first word, your listing is narrower than you think — and that is usually a product-range problem, not a tag problem.
Tags are only half the listing. Etsy weighs the title most heavily, then tags, then attributes and description. Generate tags here, then run them through the Etsy Listing SEO Checker to confirm your title carries the primary phrase and every tag is doing work. A great tag set on a weak title still loses.
Frequently asked questions
How many tags can you have on Etsy?
Thirteen. Each tag can be up to 20 characters, including spaces. Use all thirteen — an empty slot is a search phrase you are not competing for.
What makes a good Etsy tag?
A specific phrase a buyer would actually type, under 20 characters, that is not already covered by another of your tags. Long-tail phrases like "personalised ceramic mug" outperform single words like "mug".
Should I use single-word or multi-word tags?
Multi-word. Etsy matches phrases, and shoppers search phrases. A single broad word puts you against millions of listings with almost no chance of a click.
Can I use the same words in my title and tags?
Yes, and you should. Etsy weights the title most heavily, so repeating your primary phrase in a tag reinforces it rather than wasting it. Just avoid filling all thirteen tags with the same word.
