Writing an Etsy Description That Converts the Click
Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides
The description is where a click becomes a sale. The title and tags earn the visit; the description earns the purchase. And because Etsy indexes it, a well-written description also captures long-tail phrases the title and tags had no room for. It is the only field that does three jobs at once.
This generator structures a description from your inputs. Enter the product, its specifications, the key features you want to highlight, care instructions and your shipping and processing terms. It assembles them into a description with a strong opening line, a scannable feature list, and clearly labelled care, shipping and specification sections — the structure shoppers expect and skim fastest.
Worked example. Product "Personalised Ceramic Mug", specs "11oz / 325ml, 9cm tall, matte white stoneware", features "dishwasher safe, microwave safe, hand thrown, personalised with any name", care and shipping as given. The generator produces an opening line, four bullet features, a care paragraph, a shipping paragraph and a specification block — roughly 90 words and about 600 characters, all readable and all indexed.
The first 160 characters are your second headline. Etsy shows the opening of the description in some search and sharing contexts. Do not open with "Thank you so much for visiting my shop" — that is a wasted sentence in the most valuable position on the page. Open with the product and its strongest attribute: "Personalised Ceramic Mug — 11oz hand-thrown stoneware, matte white."
Answer the questions buyers actually ask. Size in centimetres and millilitres. Whether it is dishwasher and microwave safe. How long personalisation takes. Whether it ships tracked. Whether returns are accepted. Whether the colour is accurate. Every one of those is a message you will otherwise answer by hand, ten times a week, for free.
Specifications are for scanners, prose is for readers. A bullet list of features converts browsers; a short paragraph about why you made the product converts the ones who care. Use both. And keep the formatting simple — Etsy supports line breaks and basic bullets, not columns or fancy layouts, and anything clever renders as noise on a phone.
Do not repeat the title verbatim. Etsy reads both, and a description that is the title pasted three times adds nothing. Use the description for what the title could not hold: care, sizing, process, materials provenance, gift wrapping options, and the long-tail phrases that describe who the product is for. Finish with a soft call to action and a link to your shop policies.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an Etsy description be?
At least 200 characters, ideally 400-900. The opening 160 characters matter most because they appear in search previews. Long enough to answer every pre-purchase question; short enough that a phone user reads it.
What should an Etsy description include?
A strong opening line with the product and its best attribute, scannable feature bullets, specifications with real measurements, care instructions, processing and shipping terms, and a soft call to action.
Does the Etsy description affect ranking?
Yes, it is indexed and supports long-tail phrases your title and tags could not hold. More importantly it converts the click — the strongest description in a category wins even with identical SEO.
Should I start my description with a welcome?
No. Open with the product and its strongest attribute. The first 160 characters are the most valuable real estate on the page and should not be spent on greetings.
