Etsy Titles: The First 40 Characters Decide Everything

Sep 26, 2026 · Zelpura Editorial · All guides

The title is the heaviest single ranking factor on Etsy and the only part of your listing most shoppers ever read. It has a hard limit of 140 characters, a soft display limit of roughly 40 to 60 on mobile, and no room for poetry. Every character must either match a search phrase or persuade a click.

This generator assembles a title in the order Etsy rewards. Enter your primary keyword first — the phrase you most want to be found for — then secondary keywords, then attributes such as colour, size and material, then occasion or recipient, then your shop name. It joins them with a separator, stops before 140 characters, and reports the live count, the word count, and whether your primary phrase lands inside the first 40 characters.

Worked example. Primary "Personalised Ceramic Mug", secondary "handmade coffee cup, custom name mug", attributes "white, 11oz, stoneware", occasion "gift for her, birthday", shop "ClayAndCo". The generator returns Personalised Ceramic Mug | handmade coffee cup | custom name mug | white | 11oz | stoneware | gift for her | birthday | ClayAndCo — 131 characters, primary phrase in position one.

Front-load the primary phrase. Etsy truncates titles in mobile search, and shoppers scan rather than read. If your best phrase appears at character 100, most people never see it and the algorithm sees it weakened by everything before it. The generator flags when your primary keyword is not inside the first 40 characters and tells you to move it earlier.

Use separators, not filler. Pipes, dashes and commas all work; what matters is that they make the phrase boundaries machine-readable. "Mug|Personalised|Ceramic" reads as three tags to Etsy and as noise to a human. Keep the natural phrase intact and separate the distinct concepts.

Do not waste characters on words nobody searches. "Beautiful", "amazing", "you will love" and "perfect gift for any occasion" consume space that could hold a colour, a size, or a second keyword. Every adjective must be one a buyer would type into a search box. "Minimalist" is a search term; "stunning" is not.

Shop name goes last, if at all. Repeat buyers search your shop directly, so including it has some value, but it is the weakest use of a character. If you are over 125 characters, drop the shop name and keep the keyword. Run the finished title through the Etsy Listing SEO Checker to confirm the whole listing is consistent.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Etsy title be?
140 characters maximum. Roughly the first 40-60 characters show in mobile search results, so your primary keyword must appear at the very start.

What is the best structure for an Etsy title?
Primary keyword first, then secondary keywords, then attributes (colour, size, material), then occasion or recipient, then your shop name. Separate concepts with pipes or dashes.

Should I repeat my tags in the title?
Yes for the primary phrase — it reinforces the match. But do not fill the title with the same word thirteen times; use the space for distinct phrases instead.

Does punctuation matter in Etsy titles?
It matters for readability and phrase separation, not for ranking. Pipes and dashes help shoppers scan and help Etsy identify distinct phrases. Avoid ALL CAPS and emoji, which read as spam.
